A smattering of movies and pics

Still nothing much exciting to write about. Tery came home this morning -- goodbye to my clean house, but goodbye also to eating macaroni & cheese casserole for the sixth night in a row. I can safely say right now if I never see macaroni & cheese again, it'll be too soon.

I saw Be Kind, Rewind with [livejournal.com profile] dopshoppe. Jack Black is the screwball friend of Mos Def, playing a cross between himself and Dignan from Bottle Rocket. He accidentally becomes magnetized and erases all the VHS tapes in Danny Glover's mom+pop store where Mos works. Thinking on their feet, they decide to create homemade re-enactments of the movies, which catch on quickly and become hugely popular in the neighborhood. Unfortunately the FBI puts a stop to these shenanigans before they're able to raise the money needed to save the building from demolition. This movie was enormously funny before abruptly turning into a sappy, predictable paeon to small-town America being methodically eroded away by big business and soulless developers, which it seems to me we've heard many times before. *yawn*

Run Fatboy Run arrived and I excitedly brought it over to watch with Ryan and HIS BOYFRIEND JOHN. Big mistake. I always forget how distracting things are with those two. When they aren't chit-chatting about things completely unrelated to the movie, they're focused instead on their chihuahua mix Ren playing with their new chihuahua puppy Louie. Hence we missed entire scenes, but fortunately the movie isn't really that deep. Simon Pegg vows to run a marathon in a misguided attempt to win back his ex-girlfriend from veteran marathon runner, Hank Azaria (who, like Jason Bateman in Juno, plays a complete asshole totally against type). What few bits we did manage to see were very funny, and I look forward to subsequent viewings to piece it all together.

I had forgotten The Darjeeling Limited came out today. There are few films I'll run out and pay full price for sight unseen. Wes Anderson's fall firmly into that category. I also look forward to seeing this one.

Oh, and PS: Tomorrow night I'm going to see Cloverfield again with Tabby (her first time) and I CAN'T WAIT.

~*~

In my mind I had a lot more pics to offer, but I guess not. You'll have to be content with these three:

To my everlasting chagrin, Tery loves the NASCAR. Fortunately her friends at the bar were too drunk to take offense at my characterization of them. Yeeeeeeeeeeeehawwwwwwww!

This is a daycare I pass on my way to work at the kennels. Tery agrees with me the wording could be a little better.

I woke up one morning with all the animals in bed with me. What at first glance looks like one of the Kitten's paws is actually a (temporarily) defeated Malcolm resting underneath her. They're lovers AND fighters.

I've decided Malcolm (Reynolds) is the best name ever for this little guy -- he's a good (little) man at heart, but sometimes he just aims to misbehave.

OMG U LUK LIEK A TRUCKR. FRST.

What is "macaroni & cheese casserole"? Is that mac, cheese, and chicken? Why not mix it up one day and put hamburger in instead?

Yeah, Alicia said she was pretty disappointed in BKR. I think. We talked hours and hours ago. You didn't rate it, but your description doesn't exactly make me want to run out and pay to see it anyway.

I guess Nascar's an easy thing to watch when you're drunk. You don't even really have to move your eyes; all you have to do is sit and wait for the cars to come 'round again.

DON'T I? TOTALLY

[identity profile] grrgoyl.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, with a Ritz cracker crunchy topping. Add hamburger to the chicken and elbows and cheese? Are you mad???

It was a bit disappointing. It had so much potential, too. I could've forgiven the heartwarming ending if they had spoofed a Danny Glover film.

Of all her sports obsessions, NASCAR is the one I understand the least. Watching guys drive around and around in a circle. Yippee ki-yi-yay, motherfucker.

Oh, and see my edit above: I'm going back to see Cloverfield again tomorrow night. I RULEZ.

FOR SURE

[identity profile] kavieshana.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
No, add hamburger to Kraft Mac & Cheese! Delicious.

From what I understand, there is some potential to see either a fatal car crash or a trashy topless girl.

Yeah? Well...I saw Sweeney Todd twice! I'll be holding onto that thought while you're enjoying your wonderful Cloverfield experience. Hey, you don't think it'll be boring the second time 'round, do you?

I hope not. I doubt it though. Like I said in that other thread, just watching little mini clips online is enough to make my pulse race again.

Edit, many hours after the fact: But I can pretend it was boring to make you feel better if you want. Don't you wish life had this feature, when the perfect comeback doesn't occur to you until days later?

Does this mean you're not going to pretend it was boring, for me?

Ooops, no, sorry. Edited many hours after the first comment. We went last night. See my newest update for details.

No, no, no - mac and cheese casserole needs tuna! Mmmmm... casserole...

Hallo Bear! I likey your Nascar photo graph. I don't get the fandom either. Are people just watching and hoping for a big accident? A little accident? As a spectator sport it reminds me a bit of a gold fish in a bowl.

"Hey look! fast cars! Whoo!"

"Hey look! fast cars! Whoo!"

"Hey look! fast cars! Whoo!"

She tried explaining again last night. Her father raced cars while she was growing up and was something of a local track hero. So it's a bit of nostalgia for her. Then she insisted that they "really, really market it so it makes you want to watch." I answered, "They need to try harder for me, I guess."

But I did like your analogy very much. : )

Do you think Be Kind Rewind is worth going to see at all? I was really looking forward to it, but after all the mediocre reviews I'm not sure I want to spend the time/money right now. I do love Mos Def and Jack Black, though. And Michel Gondry.

[identity profile] grrgoyl.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, like I said, the beginning was HILARIOUS. Really, really funny. Then it does that complete 180 to drive home a very heavyhanded point -- which wasn't terrible, it just seemed like two totally different movies superglued together. I don't think it will suffer much on the small screen, is definitely worth a rental if you're that on the fence.

[identity profile] vagynafondue.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
There are few films I'll run out and pay full price for sight unseen. Wes Anderson's fall firmly into that category.

Same here!

Janna just saw Be Kind, Rewind but she has a huge dislike for Jack Black so her opinion of the movie meant nothing to me and I still want to see it.

I haven't seen anything good lately. I never go to the movies anymore!

[identity profile] grrgoyl.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You and I both have such uniformly good taste it's just disgusting. ; )

Awww, poor Jack. I can see where he gets trying at times, but like Will Ferrell I find myself LOLing at him to my surprise sometimes. He's just so intense and over-the-top. It's definitely worth seeing, just not necessarily at full theater price.

[identity profile] vagynafondue.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Will Ferrell is another one. I didn't expect to like Anchorman and Elf, but I laughed HARD.

I'll definitely rent it when it comes out!

[identity profile] dopshoppe.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I already told you this at the theater, but I SO don't think that Jason Bateman was an asshole in Juno! Was he clinging desperately to a youth far gone by? Yes, but I don't know about asshole. I tend to, uh, tend toward Jennifer Garner being a complete and utter bitch. I mean the character, of course, although my opinion may be biased because I've never liked her nor her manly jaw.

Also, that picture of you put joy into my soul in a way that you couldn't possibly believe.

[identity profile] grrgoyl.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe "asshole" was too strong. Unbelievably selfish and inconsiderate? I can see both sides of their dynamic and don't let things like physical appearance affect my opinion. ; ) Either way, Hank is indisputably an asshole in "Fatboy."

I live to put joy in your soul. Mission accomplished!
