Wild About Donnie
Look away,
metatronis. Spoilers ahoy!
Just watched the "Director's Cut" of Donnie Darko. Fortunately I had seen the theatrical version a month or so ago so it was still fresh and I could easily pick out the changes. Most of them weren't too remarkable. I can see why most of them were made, this version seemed way more convoluted and confusing to me. I swear there is less Frank in this cut, and that's not cool. What is even uncooler is the decision to alter my second favorite scene (actually, my first favorite was changed too, not too happy about that either) by replacing The Church's "Under the Milky Way Tonight" with another less profound and less memorable song. "Milky Way" was relegated instead to playing briefly on the car radio while Donnie rides with his father. Boo, Richard Kelly. The only improvement seems to be the more prominent focus on text from Grandma Death's book on time travel, and that enriched the plot in my opinion.
In terms of extras, "They Made Me Do It Too: The Cult of Donnie Darko" seemed promising until it became apparent it was just a bunch of elitist British snobs who were convinced Americans on the whole didn't "get" the film like they did in England, and that we don't have a taste for stories with dark endings. Listen, you stuck-up tossers, the film was written and directed by an American. We can't be ALL bad. One wanker complained the film was marketed as a "teen slasher" in America. WTF? I'm re-reading my original DVD case and don't get that it all, because trust me, I never would have rented it if that's what I thought it was.
I am also forced to wonder if Darryl Donaldson, the "#1 fan" in the "Darkomentary" (also an American, I might add) has a restraining order against him. He bloody well should if he doesn't.
