About the dog bowl, I can see the point about hydration...I would only argue that if the dog knocks over the bowl after lapping up some water, he'd probably get the same amount of refreshment whether he had a small bowl or a big bowl. Of course, when I read the question I was thinking about dog food (why, I don't know), which is more of a pain to sweep up than water is to mop. Either way, the clear answer in this case is simply to shoot the dog and give the bowl to a far more deserving creature, such as a cat.
