Your mom sounds very similar to mine. I think they both suffer from depression, though I'm not sure that would account for it completely. You know how frustrating it can be then. I forgot to write about the "conversation" we had when I was talking, it was hugely obvious she wasn't listening, and without missing a beat I finished with "and I don't know why I'm even talking." Tery laughed. Mom did too, said, "Haha, yeah, right," then I think realized what I said. I think that embarrassed her a little, though not enough.
Your poor friend. I almost feel ashamed to bitch about my family, I know it could be SO much worse. But you know, it's a little comforting to know that it's almost a universal problem. The happy, "functional" families seem to be the exception.
