My faith in humanity was (somewhat) restored Saturday night. We did Walmart meat dept, a simple inventory, and while waiting around for reports we began discussing politics, mostly because I am always curious to see how other people will be voting. One of my co-workers, astoundingly, admitted she was undecided, which just blows my mind...she hates Bush but doesn't trust Kerry. So I set about convincing her that no matter how bad Kerry might be, NO ONE can do a worse job than Bush.
In the midst of our discussion the Walmart meat manager came along and listened in for a bit. Someone mentioned Colorado being a Republican state and I said how discouraging it is to cast my minority Democratic vote knowing it will probably be lost in a sea of Republicans. At this point she joined us and this is where the life-affirming part came in. Perhaps unfairly, I tend to assume Walmart employees are generally God-fearing, right-wing types. This woman told us she was Republican, but hated Bush, was undeniably voting for Kerry, and felt that gays should be allowed to do whatever made them happy. : O Completely disrupting my worldview that Republicans = bad.
I am also clinging to a faint hope about Election Day, vis a vis: I always take the little online polls and am always so disheartened to see the candidates neck and neck, or often Bush leading by a small margin. My secret hope is that there is a vast demographic of voters either lacking internet access or too busy working three jobs to survive under Bush's regime to take part in such polls that will swing the vote sharply and decisively away from Bush, so decisively that no amount of tricksy dirty politics in Florida will save his ass. Cuz if the race is REALLY as close as those polls imply, I will be a basket case on November 2.
