I can feel it. I'm teetering on the precipice. Over the edge waits an all-consuming obsession with MST3k. I've been there before, that's how I can recognize the warning signs. But that was back in the dark days before DVD when the tedious effort involved in editing 50 videotapes full of episodes overwhelmed me, and they just kept making more and there seemed no end to it and I was forced to walk away. But now, this guy, he's selling them so cheap, whole seasons at a time, and they all fit in the palm of my hand...what's to stop me?

My natural inclination to fixate is helped along by a growing love for one Mike Nelson. Sure, I've always thought he was cute, with his boyish good looks and seemingly quiet shyness. And after reading his book Movie Megacheese I realized he is witty and clever too. But then tonight, while partaking in a little "Parts: The Clonus Horror," this host segment made my jaw drop:

Yes, he's wearing silver lamé short shorts. And a pail on his head. And showing his midriff. But something about seeing this wholesome midwestern boy tarted up and gadding about so....wantonly....well, it does funny things to me. And I don't mean "funny ha-ha."

Mmmmm mmm mmmm. Dance, my pretty one.

Hahah! I remember that segment. Did you catch the Riverdance parody bit? I don't know which ep that was. I think he was completely shirtless for it. I remember staring at his belly.

Eeee!
I totally understand.

Oh man, I need to get into MST3K again over the summer. I just do.
Good tiiimes.

Someone in my Writing Composition class mentioned MST3K, and only myself and one other person besides my teacher (I wuv my teacher) knew what it was. Grrr.

There was a huge fandom uproar last year in [livejournal.com profile] mst3k when someone posted an interview where Mike revealed that he and his wife (Bridget?) were conservative Christians. I'm not sure if he was being sarcastic or WHAT, but there was a bunch of wanking about how some people felt he was brave for revealing that and some were disgusted, etc., etc.

I remember seeing it the first time around, but not since reigniting my interest. Now I am looking forward to it again very much indeed. *drool*

That's part of its appeal, I think....only the cool kids know about it. But isn't it sad that there are people who are going their whole lives without it? It's like...never hearing music.

Well it wouldn't stop me loving him. Is he out of reach because he's married and 3 states away, or out of reach because our religious beliefs differ? But it's kind of hard to believe a Christian conservative can have such a fantastic sense of humor.

I think I may rejoin that community either way.

Where are you getting the eps?

I got Season 7 and 8 from a guy on eBay, who can't sell them there anymore because they are copies and he includes copies of the store-bought eps as well. Now I am doing business with him privately instead.

To be honest, while I quite like Mike, I was always more of a Joel fan meself. He's just so...fuzzy. *g*

I didn't think I had a preference, although I did notice a preference for Joel eps over Mike's...better written, perhaps. Plus the whole Pearl Forrester/Bobo/Brain Guy turn the show took was kind of a turn-off. But physically speaking, Joel always seemed like he was heavily stoned so I didn't really care for him personally. But fluffy, yes I can see that!

Damn. I keep meaning to get me some Sandman icons (I have a secret crush on Death)

If he's really a conservative Christian and can still dance around in tight silver lamé pants, then he's the coolest conservative Christian ever.

Yeah, as soon as it went to the Sci-Fi network I thought there was a pretty wicked downturn.

I don't really have a problem with the heavuly stoned appearance. Have you ever seen any of Joel's stand-up? OMG, I nearly wet myself...it was the funniest damn thing ever. And he's a prop comic! (Which would explain invention exchange, I guess...) Years of exposure to Carrot Top had convinced me that prop comics were terrible, until I saw Joel's routine...

Funnily enough, the Riverdance appeared in the very next ep I watched, "Jack Frost." I remembered how funny it was, with the comically exaggerated panting, etc. And yeah, hot hot upper torso. The movie itself was uniquely disturbing, however.
