It is obvious that THIS was how the movie was intended to be seen. I curse the weakminded general populace who lack the attention span (or bladder) for a 4-hour film, necessitating those of us with a little more brain power to purchase 2 different versions of the same DVD.

The cuts made in "Fellowship" just took away interesting little sidebars of information. Those taken out of "Two Towers" depleted almost every ounce of character development, leaving an action-driven (but to me ultimately very shallow and unsatisfying) shoot-em-up. Now Eowyn's romance with Aragorn is soooo much more believable (I hated her in the original version and wondered why she was throwing herself at him with no hint of interest in return. Now I see Aragorn's side of it ended up on the cutting room floor); Faramir is much more fleshed out with far more personal motives than just winning the battle against Mordor (and suddenly a lot more sympathetic). Hell, even Aragorn's horse got a bleeding backstory. Aragorn himself is revealed in much greater detail, no doubt in preparation for RotK. I really enjoyed the extra interactions between Merry and Pippin, and Sam, Frodo and Gollum, and there was even a cameo by the director that I am certain wasn't in the theatrical version. And what's this? You mean there was more to the end of the big battle we spent the entire movie leading up to than just a whimpering off-screen victory? Of all the cuts, this one mystified me (and pissed me off) the most. I see no reason why they couldn't have kept this in and sacrificed, say, the stultifying parts of the movie with Theoden and Rohan, which I still have trouble staying awake through. I can't imagine being a director faced with removing 43 minutes from my movie; it has to be a feeling tantamount to hacking limbs off your child. But I imagine the pain is lessened considerably with the Super-Special Extended DVD format. What I liked best about the restored footage was that it was more evenly dispersed through the movie, so it seemed like at least every other scene either had something extra or was totally new. Without a doubt, I like the extended "Two Towers" nearly as much as "Fellowship" (and I LOVED "Fellowship").

The only complaint with the movie comes not from me but from my cats, who without a doubt do not care in the least for the Battle of Helm's Deep in glorious DTS Surround Sound. (But there is the slight annoyance of Alan not being in it, too LOL)

...and I haven't even begun the bonus features yet.

All Hail Peter Jackson!
