I can see where it would be interpreted as funny, if you failed to take into account how incomprehensible and horrifying the sight of your husband macking on a guy would have been in 1967 rural Wyoming (hell, it's probably STILL true in 2005 rural Wyoming). And thinking of her as the "stupid straight bitch" would imply that there were signs of her husband's tendencies lying around that she was willfully ignoring (I understand you're just playing devil's advocate here). I think Michelle Williams did as good a job as she could to make us sympathetic to her. I've had to undergo far less appropriate laughter before so this really wasn't that bothersome to me.
